I hope that you and your families are enjoying a magical holiday season, I absolutely love this time of year. Tiffany from Munchkins and Mohawks was gracious enough to photograph our family again this year for our Christmas cards and I could not be more thrilled with the photos. I LOVE them more than words can express. Not only is Tiffany one of the most gifted photographers that I know, she is an amazing friend and mother to her own three little munchkins. Click here to view her website.

I apologize for my lack of posts lately, my sweet Grandma passed away late last week and we’ve been reminiscing and spending time with family. Her funeral was yesterday and it impacted me more than I thought. She was 92 after all, we knew that she wouldn’t live forever, but the reality that she is gone is difficult to process. To learn more, please click here to visit my personal blog.

I took this photo almost exactly one year ago at a family wedding, isn’t she adorable?

My brother and his amazingly gorgeous wife were married in an intimate ceremony just before Christmas at Seven Springs Resort. Beth was incredibly elegant in her lace gown and birdcage veil, a dream to photograph.

And the weather was PERFECT. There was a beautiful blanket of snow, the tree branches were heavy with white powder, and it was a clear, sunny day.
She was glowing all day.
They were willing to try anything in regards to photography, and even though it was 15 degrees, Beth knew she would love the look of outdoor photographs. If you want great photos, you have to be tough!
And doesn’t my brother look dapper?
They held their ceremony and dinner at Helen’s Restaurant, where this photograph was taken (built in 1933).
Found the perfect beam of sunlight streaking through a window.
My children (Ella-8 and Evan-3) LOVE their Uncle Mike and were thrilled to be a part of the wedding. Ella was the most attentive flower girl I have ever seen. And she even convinced her ring bearing brother to cooperate during the ceremony. There was a certain photographer/mother who wasn’t quite sure what her son would do.
My brother with myself and our parents.
A special, heartfelt congratulations to Beth and Mike, it’s impossible to describe how happy we are for the two of you!

I love having our family portraits taken, it is so much fun to be on the other side of the camera.

I met Tiffany from Munchkin and Mohawks a year and a half ago and adored her immediately. We share a love for God, our children and a passion for our respective photography businesses. I am lucky enough to have many photographer friends, but when it came time to ask someone to photograph my family, I knew that Tiffany’s style suited my vision. My sweet Ella and I are very close and I just adore this photograph of us.
Oh my gosh, look at the handsome men in my life!! I am not sure how Tiffany managed to get this AMAZING image from a three year old that never sits still, but she worked her magic and produced fantastic results. Evan is such a sweet, talkative, out-going little boy, we love him so much!
It’s impossible to describe just how gifted Tiffany is in the area of creative design. She spent hours prior to our session talking with us about who we are, what we like, and how we interact as a family. She scouted several locations, she stylized everything down to the last detail.
My girl has been in front of the camera her entire life… it’s safe to say that she enjoys the attention.
Isn’t this image to die for? It may seem strange for one photographer to promote another, but it is easy to gush about Tiffany. As I am primarily a wedding photographer, I refer family sessions directly to her. If you are interested in a session, you may want to contact her immediately, she is currently booking into AUGUST 2011.
We are a very close family and we love Jesus. Ella and I made the crosses that are hanging from the tree. My eyes well up with tears and my heart aches when I think about how much I love my husband and our children. We are so blessed.
One of my favorite photographs of Craig and I of ALL TIME.
I think we were laughing here because we felt bad for Tiffany… I kept saying… how does she do it, these kids are crazy!! She was so patient and worked SO HARD to get the best out of us and she succeeded. Tiffany, I cannot thank you enough for these timeless images, you have been blessed with an amazing talent.

Craig and I were in Philadelphia this past weekend to attend a wedding as guests, a delightful and rare treat for us (I will be posting a few snapshots from the wedding in the next few days). On the morning of the wedding, however, we found ourselves with a few hours and decided to visit Eastern State Penitentiary. I have wanted to visit ESP my entire life and was so excited to take the tour. We opted for the audio version and I loved EVERY MINUTE of our time spent there. The history was fascinating. The architecture was astonishing. And the feeling from walking the halls of place where criminals did hard time was surreal.

In 1829, legislation specifying “separate or solitary confinement at labor” was passed. Many leaders believed that crime is the result of environment, and that solitude will make the criminal regretful and penitent (hence the new word for a prison, Penitentiary). This correctional theory, as practiced in Philadelphia, would become known as the Pennsylvania System. This system eventually broke down and was abandoned in 1913.

Plans were finalized to prohibit all contact between prisoners at Eastern State, the world’s most ambitious Penitentiary. Masks were fabricated to keep the inmates from communicating during rare trips outside their cells. Cells were equipped with feed doors and individual exercise yards to prevent contact between inmates, and minimize contact between inmates and guards. If you look closely at this rendering, you can see the individual exercise yards.

One of the historical facts that fascinated me the most was how the famed architect John Haviland figured out how to have facilities in each cell. This was in an age when the White House, with its new occupant Andrew Jackson, had no running water. He devised a way, through a central piping system, to essentially flush the toilets all at the same time, once per day. The pipes in this photo were added much later.

The interior doors were also added much later. Originally, the only way into each cell was through a door located on the outside of their individual exercise yards.
Love the colors, texture, and the years represented by the different materials and craftsmanship.
And the entire time I was there, I kept thinking… if I only had a bride with me.
Notice the ghost cats? The cells were made of concrete with a single glass skylight, representing the “Eye of God”, hinting to the prisoners that God was always watching them. Built on Mormon principles, the authorities believed that prisoners were innately good, that their environment had corrupted them. This, of course, goes against Biblical teachings, which asserts the opposite, that humans are born with a sin nature.
This was the control panel for the cell doors on death row.
Inmate barber shop. The officers barber shop was much nicer.
This time of a year they offer a Terror Behind the Walls haunted tour and I have heard that it is awesome! Provided you like to be scared out of your mind. Either way, I highly recommend taking a tour, we really enjoyed the history.
