Bennett is HOME

If you are unfamiliar with this story, I first met Kelly Frey and her husband Jason when I photographed their maternity session in mid-September. It was a very uncertain time for them as their unborn son, Bennett, was giving a grim prognosis and was not expected to live after birth.

On Tuesday, September 22nd I witnessed a miracle when Bennett Ryan was born not only breathing on his own, but relatively stable.

I visited with Kelly, Jason and Bennett when he was one week old and still in the NICU at Children’s Hospital. I have been unable to visit with Bennett recently because my children were sick and I didn’t want to take any chances at passing any germs to this sweet baby. I was hoping to visit him this week, but I came down with the flu, so it will have to wait.

Last evening my heart leapt with joy when I received an email from Jason, at seven weeks of age, BENNETT IS HOME!! He sent the picture below in his email and stated, “Overall, Bennett’s health is very good, and we will wait to see how he develops.  We have many more appointments in the upcoming months which will tell more about what we might expect, but it really doesn’t matter as we sit and hold him in his home.”

Bennett Ryan

Praise God for this miracle!!  Kelly and Jason have been very moved by all of the comments on the blog, so keep ‘em coming. I am willing myself to get better as soon as possible so I can spend some time with them. What a thrill.

Jeannette - November 12, 2009 - 11:12 pm

What an absolutely fabulous miracle Bennett is! Just amazing! Having spent several weeks in the NICU with my youngest (now almost 3) I know the ups and downs that can come with each day. Looks like he came home with an apnea monitor. I pray for strength for Bennett as well as for his parents. God has him held dearly in his hands and is doing a magnificent work in his body & life. Can’t wait to see more pics of him. He’s simply precious! Enjoy each and every moment with him. “Life is not measured by the number of breaths that we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” Many blessings!

a preemie mom - November 13, 2009 - 11:13 am

A week after my son was born, doctors told us that he had two brain injuries, one severe enough that they recommended pulling the plug. Today he is six, reading on a fifth-grade level, and overall happy and healthy. The brain is very plastic, and I recommend taking fish oil if you are nursing, and baby massage if you can. Pittsburgh has amazing early intervention services, and I have seen them do miraculous things. There is always hope, and I send you all my fervent best wishes. Bennett is testament to the power of prayer and good will, what a gift.

Melanie Brletic - November 13, 2009 - 11:20 am

I am so glad that Bennett is home, he is a beautiful baby and I am praying for your family. God bless!

Kelly and Jason,You sweet baby,Bennett is the the most wonderful miracle and I hold you all very dear to my heart. I will never forget meeting you at the first Pitt football game this year( I was the redhead that stopped you to talk). My hope was that the Lord would somehow use me to comfort you, but in turn you ended up comforting me and my own family more than you may know. Kelly, as we hugged goodbye, I knew what an amazing mother you were already as you doted on your son before he was born and said, “It’s his first Pitt game, you know.” God is just so good and I couldn’t be more excited for you all as you share your first holidays together.

I just wanted to say I saw Bennett’s story this morning on the news and I have been wondering how both Kelly and Bennett and Jason of course were doing. I travel for my job and don’t always get the opportunity to see the news and the WTAE morning show is the only one I watch especially because of Kelly, love to see her in the morning, because no matter what the news she always can make you smile. I am positive I was supposed to be home this morning and later today to see this story as it is one of inspiration and joy. This little boy is truly a miracle and gives all of us hope that we can face anything. Bennett is a miracle and a blessing and thanks for sharing his story with us.

Kelly & jason I’m so happy for you. He truly is a miracle!!! However I’m not surprised knowing how much Kelly wanted a child. I can still remember the day you shared your sorrow with all of the viewers early morning – I was one of them. I wept that day and remember going to work asking if anyone had watched it. Everyone wanted to know what it was and the prognosis. I said it’s usually not good but time will tell. Miracles do happen and I so…… believe in them. I’m still living one today with a baby who is now in high school and full of life. Bennett will keep thriving as long as you give him the love and affection he needs to win his battles in life. STAY STRONG!!! Many blessings to you and your family this Thanksgiving. I’ll be sure to keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

We too have a miracle son. Our son, Larry, was born and diagnosed with a very rare syndrome that had no known survivors at the time. Our journey was long, hard, exhausting, and as we believe, by the grace of god, very rewarding. Fifteen years later, our wonderful miracle boy is a pretty typical teenager (“kidman” as he refers to himself) and continues to beat the odds.

May God continue to bless Bennett and his loving family.

Pat - November 27, 2009 - 1:18 pm

Dear Bennett, Kelly and Jason: For only by the grace of God. I know what you feel. In fact you probably deal with some of the same doctors my son had. I know Dr. Ian Pollock is now chief of neorusurgery at Childrens. My son was treated by him when he was a resident. When my son was 10 yrs. old he had a brain tumor. When it was found they told us he had 2 wk.to live without surgery and only a 10% chance of surviving the surgery. For several years following surgery they told us he would never be more than an 8 yr. old. With consant struggle he graduated college. Took 7 yrs. but he did it. Shocked everyone further when he learned to drive a car. Took forever but he did it. Some how he found his own way to learn. Never give up, enjoy every moment and use any resource you can find.

Sue - November 28, 2009 - 12:18 pm

Jason , Kelly and Bennett,
I’ve kept track of your amazing life experience! There is definitely a reason and a higher hand helping Bennett. Like I tell my students Believe!!!!! I/m the Family & Consumer Science teacher at Uniontown Area H.S. and students from my Child Care class have questioned about Bennett’s condition. Your blog gave them a good understanding and there were may positive comments about you decision as a couple to choose life. You are both excellent role models as young parents in the eyes of my youth.
Good Luck with Bennett, enjoy every moment they grow so quickly.
Pam

Julia O'C - February 12, 2010 - 6:26 pm

I think about little Bennett a lot, as Kelly’s and my birth experiences and pregnancies were very similar. It looks like their little guy has a shunt? My son does, too – for an arachnoid cyst. Emmett just turned 3. He’s had the shunt since he was 2 days old. I’m so, so grateful for the shunt – for all of the technology that keeps my little guy going. Emmett and Bennett are two very lucky boys! And we’re lucky to be their parents of true miracles.

Congratulations on your gorgeous little boy! :)

Joseph - March 3, 2010 - 3:47 pm

To Kelly – your baby is indeed a miracle. You make my mornings better five days a week – I always look at you on the TV screen as I drink my coffee. Maybe you should consider doing a story for TLC regarding your “miracle baby.”

al hovland - June 14, 2010 - 9:19 pm

Praise the work of the Lord.

Pat - May 4, 2011 - 8:10 am

Heather, I was in your photography class at CCBC when Bennett was born. We all prayed and shared tears and I am so happy to see the pictures of Kelly and Jason’s beautiful family. They are truly blessed by God.
